Charles Merivale, a Cambridge University student, sent a letter to Charles Wodsworth, an Oxford University student. In this letter Merivale challenged of Oxford to a regatta of canoes in on the river Thames. Oxford accepted and the regatta was held on 10th of june, 1829. Oxford was the winner.
